Israel and the UAE Sign Peace Deal

Israel and the UAE have established a historic deal. What’s really happening?

Summary

The first-ever flight between Israel and the United Arab Emirates flew from Ben Gurion Airport to Abu Dhabi yesterday.
  • In Abu Dhabi, Israeli and UAE delegations met to finalize the details of a pact which would normalize relations between the two countries for the first time since 1972, when the UAE established a boycott against Israel.
  • In addition to establishing a direct commercial flight between the nations, the pact includes cooperation on financial services, investment, and diplomacy.
  • Donald Trump has taken credit for the deal, calling it a “huge breakthrough.”

reporting from the left side of the aisle

  • Casts doubt on the gravity of the achievement, pointing out that a “peace deal” was never necessary because the countries never had a serious (violent) conflict.
  • Promotes conspiracy theories that Trump has an ulterior motive for the agreement.
  • Draws attention to the impact that the agreement will have on Palestinians in the region.

  • Labels the agreement a peace deal
  • Glorifies the deal as an important step towards peace and unity in the Middle East.
  • Reminds readers that this huge deal would not have been possible without President Trump.
