Two unrelated mass killings in Texas this weekend left at least 15 people dead and 13 wounded.

  • Eight people were shot and killed at a Dallas-area mall on Saturday afternoon.
  • On Sunday morning, seven people were struck by a vehicle and killed waiting at a bus stop in Brownsville, Texas.
  • A gunman exited his sedan and started shooting people on the sidewalk at Allen Premium Outlets, a Dallas-area outdoor shopping center. The shooter killed eight people and wounded seven others before he was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer who was coincidentally nearby.
  • The officer “heard gunshots, went to the gunshots, engaged the suspect and neutralized the suspect,” Allen Police Chief Brian Harvey told reporters.
  • President Joe Biden once again called on Congress to pass gun control legislation to ban so-called assault weapons and limit magazine capacity. There is little chance Congress will pass anything after passing a bipartisan gun bill last year.
  • The deadly crash in Brownsville occurred at about 8:30am on Sunday morning. A Range Rover SUV plowed into a group of people waiting for a bus stop near a migrant shelter. Seven people were killed and six were wounded, and most of the victims were reportedly Venezuelan men.
  • The driver of the SUV was taken into custody and has not yet been identified.
  • Brownsville is near the Mexican border and has seen a sharp increase in migrant arrivals in recent weeks.
  • The fatal crash occurred near one of the busiest migrant shelters in the border town, which declared a disaster last month ahead of the expect migrant surge after the expiration of Title 42 policy in the next few days.

reporting from the left side of the aisle

  • The Washington Post reported the gunman in Allen, Texas, Mauricio Garcia, may have held white supremacist or neo-Nazi beliefs. He had a patch on his chest labeled “RWDS” which stands for Right Wing Death Squad.
  • According to CNN, the gunman had an AR-15 style firearm, another firearm and extra magazines with him when he was shot dead. He underwent firearms training as part of his job as a security guard.
  • The New York Times reported the ages of the injured in Allen, Texas ranged from age 5 to 61. The Times noted the Allen attack is the second-deadliest shooting of 2023, after the Monterey Park, California shooting at a ballroom where a gunman killed 11 people.

  • The New York Post reported the identity of the Allen shooter is Mauricio Garcia, 33. Police searched the Dallas home of his parents and a motel where he had been staying. He did not have a “serious” criminal background and worked as a security guard.
  • Breitbart reported the parents of the suspected mall shooter requested a translator to speak with law enforcement when they arrived at their home. The suspect, who was in his 30s, lived in the house with his parents.
  • “I need everybody I got,” said the heroic Texas police officer who took down the Allen mall shooter in a frantic backup call, according to Fox News. Gunshots could be heard in the H&M store as the officer approached, and he neutralized the suspect within 2 minutes of the call.
