U.S. Marshalls Foil Assassination Attempt on Justice Brett Kavanaugh by Leftist

U.S. Marshalls foiled an assassination attempt on Justice Brett Kavanaugh, arresting an armed man outside his home who admitted he wanted to give his life a purpose by killing a Supreme Court Justice.

Summary

U.S. Marshalls foiled an assassination attempt on Justice Brett Kavanaugh, arresting an armed man outside his home who was “upset” by the leaked draft of an opinion overturning Roe v. Wade.

  • Law enforcement charged Nicholas John Roske, 26, of Simi Valley, California with the attempted murder of a Supreme Court Justice.

  • Roske took a taxi to Kavanaugh’s home at approximately 1:50 a.m. armed with “a Glock 17 pistol, ammunition, a knife, zip ties, pepper spray, duct tape, and other items that he told police he would use to break into Kavanaugh’s house and kill him.”
  • When Roske arrived at Kavanaugh’s home, he called the police on himself, telling the 911 dispatcher he was having suicidal thoughts, was armed, and had traveled from California to “kill a specific United States Supreme Court Justice.”
  • The perpetrator told authorities he was angry about the draft opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade, the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and “concerned that Kavanaugh would vote against gun regulations in a major firearms rights case also due to be decided in the coming weeks.”
  • President Joe Biden did not personally comment on the incident. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters the President “condemns the actions of this individual in the strongest terms. Any threats of violence or attempts to intimidate justices have no place in our society.”

reporting from the left side of the aisle

  • Tucked far down its homepage (and far back on A20 in the print edition), The New York Times’ write-up notes the affidavit alleges Roske had a specific plan to carry out his attack. He was dressed in black and had tools to break into the house, where he planned to kill the justice and then himself.
  • The Washington Post’s report was filed under the “local crime and public safety” section. The Post initially broke the story and noted the affidavit alleges “Roske stated that he began thinking about how to give his life a purpose and decided to kill the Supreme Court Justice.”
  • Politico noted that after the incident, Republicans in Congress urged Democrats to end the delay and pass a bill to increase security for the Supreme Court and justices’ families.

  • National Review wrote the attempt on Kavanaugh’s life was “the foreseeable consequence of too many of our political leaders treating the emotions of fear and anger as convenient tools to get what they want.” Jim Geraghty cited the comments from Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on the steps of the Supreme Court that Gorsuch and Kavanaugh had “unleashed the whirlwind” and would “pay the price.”
  • The Wall Street Journal condemned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for delaying passage of the Supreme Court Police Parity Act. The bill would increase security for Supreme Court justices after the recent protests at their homes and the left-wing group Ruth Sent Us doxed the justices by releasing their home addresses online. The bill passed the Senate unanimously.
  • The Dispatch observed the assassination attempt on Kavanaugh as just the latest violent incident perpetrated by a pro-abortion extremist in recent weeks. Two crisis pregnancy centers have suffered arson attacks and several more have been vandalized.
